Mato
MATO (Brazilian Portuguese): noun. Set of small wild plants. Land where these plants grow. The countryside, the interior (as opposed to the city), woodlands.
Mato was born to help release my creativity through handwork. I am a biologist and have spent 20 years in academic research. The full-time dedication limited my time to do other activities and express myself in an artistic way. Long story short, I left Brazil, my home country, to a new life in the Netherlands where I assembled a small workshop. The equipment is not professional and production is small scaled. But the art is original and fully owned by me. Mato allows me to (proudly) be part of a growing movement of small businesses, slow fashion, artisanal makers and entrepreneurs.
Nature is obviously my muse and sustainability is taken very seriously. Mato makes durable jewelry that can be passed on through generations. I use recycled silver, enamel glass, low value stones, green energy and second hand equipment. Mato stays away from plastics.
Mato exists to celebrate life. From the stubborn plants that push their way through the asphalt, to the most flamboyant butterflies. We are all starstuff and I am happy to be sharing this time with you.
